The problem with this novel for me is that it's written for people who are already longtime fans of the series, not as a starting point. I got this as a freebie, thinking as a prequel it would be a good way to test the waters. So things start of with a bang with the order carrying out a hunt and then we're on to the beginnings of the romance. So Savannah has no idea what these Breed vampires are, what a Bloodmate is, how vamps become Rogues, what a Minion is, etc. At last we come to the point at the end of one dramatic chapter where he sits her down to tell her the whole deal...and the next chapter starts by saying he's just told her everything. So no explanation for reader. She makes a few comments that would mean something if you had read the series--something to indicate that she's just heard a lot of big time stuff but that meant nothing to me and explained nada. So if you haven't read book one of the series DO NOT READ THIS FIRST. Yes, the story is sexy and suspenseful and well written but it's not a good introduction to the series. The author does make a comment that it answers questions the fans had about a popular couple in the series but I felt that it did a disservice to readers like me, readers picking up as a "prequel". For the regular fans I can tell that this would be a winner, just not meant for a rookie.

Author is educated, articulate, and knows how to write grammatically. Starts out great! References good lit; I’m excited. Finally vampire story AND intelligence.Nah. Falls into the same old trite, cliched romance crap with canned expressions of passion. Sigh. I had such high hopes. Clearly this author could do better if not trapped in corny romance crap that looks like it was ripped from a bodice ripper, harlequin romance. Rip off even free. Did not finish. Plan to rip it right off my device.

This is a middle of the road vampire story. There are a few nice twists - Savannah's psychometry and the tragic elements in the Breeds' backstories, for instance - but overall, it's same old same old.The main issue is the instalove/destined mate angle. I'm beginning to wonder if the problem is lazy writers. It saves an awful lot of effort if you don't have to work to get your H and h together, but it also cuts out a lot of the richness and depth of a committed relationship when you have the two people glued together for life with absolutely no effort on anyone's part. This story was much less interesting because it felt like Lara Adrian had left Samantha no other real choice but the one she made, and so it was of a less choice than 'of course'.For me, the ratio of sex scene to story scene here is a bit too high, as I feel the point is the story and the other elements should be subordinate, but I know that many supernatural/urban fantasy readers prefer their books on the spicy side, so take that as IMO only.

This book is a prequel for the Midnight Breed Series, (Gideon & Savannah). It is not necessary to have read any of the series to understand this Novella.Savannah is an Art History in 1974 and she has psychometric abilities. One night while cataloguing newly donated items, she accidentally touches a sword and sees a golden haired man kill another man, with the sword.Gideon is part of the Order, vampires who hunt Rogues, vampires who have been consumed by bloodlust.Eventually the two meet and very quickly they get together.I have read the first three books in the Midnight Breed Series and had not been overly impressed, however, when I saw this one was being offered for free, I decided to take another chance. While, I did like this couple more than the others, I found I had the same issues as with the others. The relationship happens too fast, the universe is overly flawed. While I did enjoy the repartee between Gideon and Savannah, and Savannah seemed to be smarter than the other heroines, I found myself wishing for more. This is not an issue that this was a novella, the issue is that important parts of the back story seemed to be missing. While intellectually I can understand Gideon's grief over the loss of his brothers, I didn't feel it. I couldn't get behind Gideon's guilt, not given the time of their death and the times and the way it happened. However, one of the most irksome things in this and the other novels is the word , "suckhead", in this one it doesn't fit the time and the others it just continually pulled me out of the story. Which I suppose leads me to a minor revelation. All the members of the order seem to be of modern times. They don't seem to have any "old world" charm, just "old world" male superiority complex.I read the Kindle version acquired from my local library. If you are looking for some time pass it's not bad. If you are looking for a taste of a new series, I have to say this is better than the three novels in the series that I've read. So, if you don't like this, you're not going to like the novels.

It was fun to read the beginning of this series! I listened to the story and the narrator did a good job, but I didn't like some of the accents. I've really enjoyed every book of this series so far, and I've read pretty much all of them. So I definitely recommend reading it! Love the idea of The Breed (Vampire like people), and the romance is always passionate and sweet. Savannah is human, and Gideon is Breed. Savannah's friend is murdered, and it's possible it may have been a Rogue Breed so Gideon is checking it out. There's an attraction between Savannah and Gideon, but Savannah doesn't know about the Breed. She's also got some secrets up her sleeve. Some of the dialog wasn't great; especially Savannah's sister, and there was a bit too much of the women being damsels, but still an entertaining story. I really enjoy the bits of action as well! Definitely read this series!
