Excellent information and an easy read. I recently started dating someone with herpes and do not have it myself and this has helped me thoroughly understand the risks, ways I can protect myself, how to have conversations about it, psychological aspects of acquiring herpes, and more. This is what I wish sex ed was like in school! Real information about risks with no exaggeration, shame, or fear mongering.

Having recently had a long, very painful first outbreak, I bought this book to understand what was happening to me, and what I could expect for the future. It contains a lot of good information, and I highly recommend it as a fact/reality-check. Everything appears up-to-date, though I would've liked to see a summary with key facts in the back, to refer to in the future. The author covers what herpes is, the various types, how often you can expect an outbreak, how contagious you might be to partners, as well as basic preventative measures against outbreaks. Warren even goes briefly into other STDs, especially if they relate to herpes. Overall you're getting a great education on herpes, written in a very upfront manner - everything you should have known, or wish you had known before getting this STD - but which will help you lead a safer sexual life now.The book is very thorough on facts, but I was disappointed by how the emotional aspects were dealt with. As many people with herpes know, and certainly those who've had bad outbreaks, getting this disease can be very traumatic, leaving you wondering how or if you'll ever be able to responsibly have a normal sex life again. The author talks about the emotions, but it's done in a kind of 'handbook' style - as in, 'You're probably feeling this, and you might be feeling that... but the truth is, it's not that bad, or maybe you could have been more responsible, and yes your sex life will be different, but maybe that's not such a bad thing.'Personally, I found it unconvincing, a bit patronizing, and just not too helpful in that regard. It certainly didn't come close to helping me cope with the amount of pain I was in, and the dread of what it might mean for my entire sexual life. It reads like a doctor, giving you information, while trying to seem compassionate. It just didn't work that well for me.I also wanted a lot more information on the initial outbreak and how to cope with it, both physically and emotionally. How severe an initial outbreak can be differs widely from person to person. Some people don't even know they've been infected - while others, like me, feel they've caught the worst flu of their life, are in a lot of pain, and are totally drained of energy. The person who gave me herpes never had a bad reaction and thought "everyone has herpes anyway," so she thought there was no reason to tell me she was infected. These half-truths about herpes - that it's so common, and isn't that bad - and adding to the mix the emotional issues and stigma (from the medical establishment too, which simply ignores herpes in routine STD testing) - are what allows this disease to quietly rack up more and more victims each year. This book does confirm these facts for the most part. Yes, a lot of people do have herpes - maybe 20-50% of the population - and many don't have bad outbreaks, or that often. But that's not everyone. I didn't have herpes antibodies, and my symptoms were so bad I felt they could've put me in the hospital. So in that, I don't feel the book put as much effort in talking about the severe reactions and worser-case scenarios, which some of us will have. Yes, no author wants to add to the trauma or fear, but for those going through the worst-case, you really do want to know, if only to know that you're not alone. In closing - if you have had or are having a bad outbreak, or feel traumatized by this experience - I recommend reading another book alongside this one, to help you with the emotional issues - which are just as important if not more, to dealing with this disease constructively. I've skimmed through some of Kelly Shuh's books and may check out one of those in the future.Best wishes to you.

I whip out this book everytime I get insecurities and highly recommend this book to those who also have the disease or for those who would like to learn more about it

Not everything in here is accurate, and she’s supposed to be a specialist.

Because of this book, I learned that the tests are not 100% reliable and to get a second or third test to confirm. Here's my story: The nurse from my doctor's office called and said the results showed positive for exposure. I just took her report on good faith and began to process what this would mean in my life. I even joined a website for positive singles. Then I read this book. Because of it, I requested a hard copy of the test results. (the doctor's office didn't provide it) When I got the results, I saw that the antibodies tested into the positive range only by a tenth of a point- just barely outside equivocal. Not only that, but the antibodies were only positive for hsv-1, the kind typically associated with coldsores. But the results for hsv-2, the kind typically associated with geintal herpes was negative. The nurse had not told me either of these things over the phone. So I ordered an immunoblot blood test and it came back negative for both hsv-1 and hsv-2. I called my doctor's office to inform them of the nurse's mistake and suggested that they take a lot more time explaining results and encourage patients to confirm results after the initial test. Anyway, this book helped me advocate for my own health because no one cares about your health as much as you do! If you are definitely positive though, have faith! When I was working with the knowledge that I did have hsv, her information and guidance was so comforting and healing. I began to feel hopeful and encouraged that life goes on. She separated out the facts about the condition from the stigma that makes it seem so much worse than it is. Overall, this book is a great resource for facts and kindness.

This is the best reference i've found for herpes. info is laid out clearly, with frequent reassurances that seek to reduce feelings of shame and stigma in the sufferer. There are direct answers to questions regarding how to talk with potential partners, etc...all presented sensitively and in lay terms, while not skimping on the facts.

Loads of info about this dreaded disease

The author has, at last, written a comprehensive yet understandable guide to this virus. I wish this book had been available when I was first diagnosed in 1993. While I learned a lot more about herpes from this book even after all these years of living with it, the book was most valuable to me as a source of information to my current partner, who does not have the virus. After reading the book, she was able to make an informed, knowledgeable decision about becoming physically intimate. She remains free of the virus, due to both precautions and luck, but fully understands the risks and how to minimize them.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has herpes, or knows someone who does and wants to better understand it.
