ABOUT THE AUTHOR JACK H. KOEHLER Jack H. Koehler was born and raised in the backwoods of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After high school he spent four years in the U.S. Air Force. After being discharged from the Air Force he worked at a variety of jobs while pursuing his higher education. He graduated from Fresno State University in 1963. During his first career (with the U.S. Geological Survey) he authored more than twenty published scientific reports. That experience prepared him well for his second career (and first love) of writing books about pocket billiards. He has been fascinated by the games of pool since his first exposure to it when he was about ten years old (he’s now eighty). His books on pool are the result of over forty years of observation, participation, and experimentation. In his books he focuses on scientific reasoning as opposed to unverified opinion in developing and explaining the concepts of pool. Although scientific principals are followed, all of his books are written in easy to understand layman's terms. The books he has authored include: THE SCIENCE OF POCKET BILLIARDS UPSCALE NINE-BALL UPSCALE ONE-POCKET SLINGSHGOT SHOOTING Yes, he is also an expert slingshot shooter and has placed in several National tournaments.

great insight really try to study whats said
the book has helped me tremendously, I wish I had found it a long time ago.
Save your time and money and instead read Winning One Pocket by Eddie Robin and the companion book Shots Moves and Strategies (also by Robin). Both books are out of print and expensive, but in this case you get exactly what you pay for. My biggest problem with Upscale One Pocket is that it does not present enough examples of responding to the break or provide enough moves and strategies to beat even B players. The book has few decent illustrations, which really makes it difficult to learn any shots, and in many other ways it just doesnt get it done. Concepts such as playing the score, the value of taking intentional scratches, skill level in choice of shot etc are all given minimal treatment. After reading this book my one- pocket game did not improve and it did not inspire me to get on a table and practice any particular shots. The two previously mentioned Eddie Robin's books improved my game two balls and I am still learning from them.
THE BOOK IS A INFORMATIVE, AND IT'S EASY TO UNDERSTAND, THE INFORMATION AUTHOR IS CONVEYING . I THINK MOST EVERYONE'S (unless your a very accomplished) GAME WILL BENEFIT FROM READING THIS BOOK. JUST UNDERSTANDING THE ANGELS FOR TWO AND THREE RAIL SHOTS WAS A GREAT HELP TO ME. BESIDES NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED.....
This is an excellent primer for anybody who wants to graduate from the Plebeian games of 8-Ball and Nine Ball and start learning the cogitative, erudite game of One Pocket.

Had very good information for someone who plays at an intermediate level. A little dated for today's play, but a good value for the price. I think DVDs are the way to go these days.
