Tulani has done an excellent job of putting together the much needed info for caring for natural, chemical free, hair. Why there are so few books on the subject is a mystery to me given the health ramifications involved with continuously using caustic chemicals on ones scalp. But, the need to "fit in" is greater than the need for a healthy life. Well I am finally brave enough and secure in my own heart to know that whatever God gave me is what I have and if it sticks straight up then it sticks straight up. I use this book as a reference guide along with Pamela Ferrell and Lonnice Bonner's books. It helps to re-read some of the sections when you are staring in the mirror with a head full of nappy hair and thinking why oh why don't I just get a perm. Whenever I feel the urge to take that road I read one of my reference guides. Not only for the how to info but the moral support as well. My hair is now 6 to 7 inches and growing like crazy. In other words it quit breaking off and I think that the longer it gets the easier it will be to manage. I look forward to the day I can easily wear buns and do single braids. This isn't far off but until this time I will deal with the twisting and braiding while I wait for a few more inches to grow.

I enjoyed this book. It's very informative. I definitely learned a lot about my hair in this book.

Not worth 10 dollars. YouTube and gooleis your friend. I had this book for over 5yrs and I haven't opened it for over 5yrs no lye😂😂

I did the big chop March 2012 and the ONLY way I have learned to take care of my natural hair is via the internet and youtube until I decided to buy some books from AMAZON. I purchased 12 books (NO LIE!) and NO Lye! was the first book I purchased and when I say out of the 12 books No Lye was and is the best It really is no lie! This book covered everything and opened my eyes and hair. I could barely put this book down and will continue to make it a staple regarding my natural hair care.

I bought this book for a friend for Kwanzaa. I skimmed throught it and immediately wished I could have gone back and bought one for myself (the boutique only had one copy). This book gives several alternatives to natural hair styling and realistic suggestions on caring for them. It is thorough and creative. You can tell that the author believes every word she writes and that this is a for-real lifestyle and not just a fad.

This is a good read with good info, but since it's an old book some of the info is outdated. The Science of Black Hair is a much better read so far.

Ms Kinard knows what she's doing. She discourages the use of straighteners while understanding that the natural way is just not for some of us. But if you've even remotely considered locs, the section she's devoted to this glorious way of life will help you come to a decision. My hair has been natural for 7 years and with the help of this lovely book, I started my husband's locs last weekend (a highly sensual experience). Thank you, Tulani!

This book is a lye. I was expecting recipes to use for homemade products, but she instead recomends chemicals to use on our hair. Totally sucked. You are better of watching people on Youtube for hair tips.
