"You do need an exercise habit to keep yourself fit & happy and Carolee gives you the info you need to get fit, healthier & happier in her book. As we age, exercise is not optional. Learning how to carve out time to meet our fitness needs or to push ourselves physically and mentally is one of the greatest challenges to aging well." - Lindsey Lu, Aging for the Rest of Us“The lessons [Walker] learned from this lasting effort ... will inspire readers who seek better fitness and weight control but who may be older or have long despaired of seeing the types of routines that could either fit into their lifestyles or produce measurable results.…Getting My Bounce Back is a powerful blend of memoir and fitness advice guide that will inspire and delight older women.” – Donovan’s Bookshelf"Journalist and wellness blogger Walker recounts the unexpectedly severe blow it was to her self-image to approach a new job at the U.S. State Department in her mid-50s and find it to be too much for her physically. The failure to meet its increased physical demands was a blow to her confidence, and it motivated her to undertake the fitness journey that she chronicles in these pages. It likewise informs her upbeat tone; she assures her readers that it’s never too late to take control of their own wellness, as illustrated by entries in her daily journal about how she got into running and healthy living. …The narrative’s overall tone is likewise encouraging. “Exercise and fitness support our life. It makes us strong – physically, emotionally, and psychologically. It keeps our heart pumping. It promises that we will be able to keep at our life’s work longer than if we did not move and that we will someday take our children’s children’s children swimming in the ocean when we are 98. It is a joyful experience and we get to do it. How lucky are we to be able to support our life like this? As Carolee would say: ‘You got this.’ – Sarajean Rudman, from the foreword“Carolee Walker’s Getting My Bounce Back is an engaging and inspiring read. Getting fit and training to compete in endurance events is no walk in the park, even for the hardiest among us. There are few books out there that genuinely describe the ups and downs of reinventing yourself at midlife while simultaneously teaching us how we can all do it. In this memoir, Carolee’s authentic voice shines through as she describes her personal journey of self-discovery and personal mastery. Carolee’s journey is instructive, funny, relatable, and most of all, inspiring.” – Chris Friesen., Ph.D., sport & performance neuropsychologist and author of the High Achievement Handbook series“Getting my bounce back are the words every runner needs to hear. Often we are shown images and words that portray an easy connection between starting a fitness journey and reaching the moment where everything is easy (although as an elite runner, I know that it never truly becomes easy, you just get tougher). Most books and publications just show the end result, as if we magically appear at the peak of fitness and ideal look, but Carolee allows us to peek into her inner mind, showing us that there is a journey behind those photos, and a point where a health journey switches over from the ‘lose weight mentality’ to realizing the joy and light exercise brings us in more valuable and meaningful ways. For anyone who has ever wondered why everyone else made it seem so easy, this book is for you.” – Tina Muir, elite runner and host of the Running for Real podcast

The book is a road map for the aging person who wants to get back in shape. I want to add the author includes some interesting recipes which she thinks her in her efforts, and songlists which which fit in with her different workout programs. I think anybody with an interest in getting his or her "bounce back" will find this book to be very interesting, informative and helpful.

Like many women of a certain age, I lost a bit of my vim and vigor along the way. The busyness of life just got in the way and self care went by the wayside. The idea of getting my bounce back is enormously appealing to me and this story was very encouraging and inspiring to me. I don't think I will be running any marathons anytime soon but I feel encouraged and empowerded to start moving and grooving. Highly reocmmended!

I love this book. It is so warm and entertaining yet filled with useful information. The author writes along focused on training, diet, injuries, etc., then takes a break to share some philosophy - it is still a crime to sexually assault someone even if they are dumb or make dumb decisions. The book has changed my behavior. I started using my pedometer when I walk my dog and make sure we walk at least a mile. I also have changed my diet. It wasn't horrible, but I definitely did not eat enough fruit and vegetables. (The recipes look interesting also.) I hope others find her book.

There is so much zest in this book - for living, eating exercising, cooking - for music and for writing. Carolee's book is her story of how she analyzed her place on the spectrum of aging and her personal response to its challenges. An enjoyable read and an opportunity to think about your 'BOUNCE."

I am also a 57 year old who thought my bi weekly yoga and weekend bike rides were enough. I was totally blessed to get to read this book as it was written. I had endless excuses about ‘why I was different’. Well I’m not It took about 6 months of baby steps before I finally decided to dive in. I cannot run (severe joint disease) so I swim and bike. My income is not great, because of my illness, so I do small group training once a week and my trainer gives me homework for the rest. I found a dietitian who teaches using Facebook and it’s affordable. I have sooooo much gratitude for the author for giving me this gift of less pain, less depression and feeling more in control of my body. Thank you!

What a joy it was to read this book!!! Funny, informative, and inspiring. Love the recipes and actually have tried them. It is a book with heart and passion for a healthier you. With this book as a guide, a healthier me is certainly in my future!!!

I liked how Carolee used her compendium of daily blogs to guide the reader through her fitness plan. It's an easy read and compels one to assess how they might deploy a similar strategy for themselves. Carolee is a fun, engaging and personable writer. Her iPod playlists were fun to see and worth trying a similar approach if you like to entertain yourself with music while exercising.

Very inspiring! Great advice. She provides her workout music repertoire, as well as healthy recipes. Fun to read , as well!
