This book was one of the most impressive books I have read recently. It is full of research and statistics to back up his conclusions, but is still very readable and easy to understand. If you are interested in who really cares about others, about helping others and not just saying they care, but really doing something, then you need to read this book.It is an eye opener about who really cares, the liberal, the conservative, the religious or the secular. Who really cares enough to reach in their pocket and give some money, or who really care enough to volunteer their time is answered in this book and the answer will surprise and enlighten you.
I bought this after listening to Brooks speak at the Washington Policy Center's 2016 annual dinner. The book is full of statistics and research analysis on who really gives of their own resources (HINT- It is NOT Liberals). Those with a government centered mindset, whether in the US or Europe, are Extremely Stingy with their own money and very "generous" with YOUR Money
Excellent and insightful, well-researched and plainly stated without the nonsense garble that has become the hallmark of academic "writing". Whether you are active in a charity or not, this is an interesting and well-presented book about who gives and why, with results that might surprise you.
A very good lesson on who gives more to charity in our country. There are statistics with supporting evidence for the book's review.

Conservatives give significantly more than Liberals and Democrats (money, time, real empathy)...while it is not surprising to me, it was intuitively contrary to what the author, a Democrat, expected to find.
Wonderful book for anyone who really wants to understand private charity.
