I ordered several books while researching the attire of the late 50's for a play I am currently costume designing. This book was the best visual source. Not only is is thick considering the more limited time period it covers, but it also included men's wear (which some of the other books I have ordered leave out) in addition to children's, teen girls, and women's attire for multiple occasions from work to leisure to sleepwear, and coats, shoes, accessories, etc. It was also helpful that the images were in COLOR; it's one thing to read about the color combinations of a period but another to see them in use. If you are looking for resources on the fashions of the late 50's for everyday people...(not models or what would have been in the fashion magazines because let's be honest very few people actually wore what is in the fashion plates of any particular period) I would definitely order this book and one other "American Costume, 1915-1970" by Shirley Miles O'Donnol with foreword by Lucy Barton (whose book "Historic Costume for the Stage" is a must for all earlier time periods.)

I have one of these books on 80s style and as usual, this is a great book, showing all the styles from this time period. Anyone into fashion or the 50s will really enjoy this book, with lots of photos.

I use this book as a reference in my Costuming class, easy to use and covers all types of clothing from the 1950's.

I was born in early 1953 so the late 50's are when I started to become aware of things feminine. I seem to be drawn to this book probably more often than I do with the other books in this series. No, I'm not getting any younger (or slimmer) but a girl can dream. Anyway, this is the typical Schiffer treatment with lots of well chosen designs well reproduced in color. The only thing I could criticize are Ms. Shih's personal asides within the text which, of course, are her opinions and not mine. It's a minor thing, really.

Joy Shih and Schiffer Publications have done it again. Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950's is an excellent Primary resource for Costume and Fashion Designers. I find that the layout and the organization of this book much better than Schiffer's "early 1950's". Unfortunately it only focuses on Sears Catolgues' perspective of this era, which is only middle America, blue collar, suburbia. I give this book for stars for its' use of primary resource, clear division of clothing types, reproduction of true fifties color, and actual cost of garments today and yesterday
