Each island is dealt with in detail, including a check list of birds for each and listing the best birdwatching locations.... This book needs updating. Sadly, the native bird populations on Kauai are plummeting and the information in this book no longer applies. This has happened on Kauai in the last ten years and bird species that were easy to see in the early 2000's are disappearing and possibly joining the tragic extinctions of previous bird extinctions on the islands. You should not base a birding trip to see the endemic Kauai forest birds based on the information in this book. On other islands, this book information is still useful, but I prefer the Pratt book "Enjoying Birds and Other Wildlife on Hawaii", which may or may not still be in print. If you are going to Hawaii for birding, you should do your trip research on-line for more accurate information, or you will likely be disappointed.

This book would benefit from an update but there is plenty of information that has helped us to plan a trip to Kauai and Big Island.

This book was not helpful. We ended up wasting a whole day from our trip due to this book.

Adequate but not extensive. I visited Kauai this time and was able to find some birding areas.

Probably a good book for a professor perhaps but I'm just a traveler who wanted to see pretty color pictures of Hawaiian birds so that I could identify them on my trip. The majority of black & white pictures in this book left me feeling...."unprepared" for the wonderful world of colorful Hawaiian fauna.

not a sibley's but a great guide book list bird species by habitat and island. highly recommend for those interested in bird watching

Very few pictures of Hawaiian birds in this book. Two of the pictures are a chicken and a cardinal. Most of the pictures are black and white -- and of scenery, not birds. It provides suggestions for places to look, but isn't going to help you identify what you saw or help you know what to look for. I would not recommend this book.

I'm going to Hawaii on business this summer, then staying a few extra days to bird. I hope to use it to locate the endemic bird species of Hawaii. It looks great.
